Translation of an article of Willy Tadeo Layug and Jesús de la Verdad in Diario Sur.

A sculptor intervenes in the carving of the Lord of Truth in his workshop in the Philippines.

Wilfredo Tadeo-Layug, one of the leading names in sacred art in the Asian country, also carved the Virgen del Sagrario de Carranque last year

The Lord of Truth, from the Parish Group of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Verdad before Caiaphas and María Santísima del Sagrario, is already worshiping in the parish of San José Obrero, in the Carranque neighborhood. The image, the work of Sevillian Mario Zambrano from 2015, has been subjected to an intervention process, by the Filipino sculptor Wilfredo Tadeo-Layug, with a workshop in the district of Betis, in the province of Pampanga, and one of the leading names in the sacred art from that South Asian country, who, previously, in 2020, executed the new Virgen del Sagrario, which replaced the piece also carved by Zambrano.

As recalled by the art historian and artistic adviser to the pro-brotherhood, José Manuel Leiva Aldea, both effigy have been in procession until 2019. However, in the midst of a pandemic, «the corporation decided to bet on the replacement of its Marian owner and contacted the sculptor Willy Tadeo, who is the architect of the new Virgen del Sagrario”, explains Leiva. Likewise, satisfied with the work of the Filipino artist, the brothers decided to send the bust of Jesús de la Verdad to the Philippines «so that he could finish the areas that the first author had left unfinished, such as, for example, the back of the head, which he had a mass in his hair that was amorphous and motionless”, points out the art historian The work of adaptation and completion of the image of the Lord has consisted "in the restructuring and anatomical correction, both of the bust and of the hands, including the re-polychrome and patina of said parts, offering it a more human look", comments Leiva, who adds that the sculptor, "in addition to having notably improved the physiognomy of the effigy's face, has removed part of the abundant lock of hair on the right side that prevented the correct vision of the face," he reveals.

On the other hand, the restorers Miguel Ángel Robles Gálvez and Marta García Plaza have been in charge of the body and the base. Thus, the task of both has consisted "in adapting the bust to the body, finishing the body and the feet, making them anatomically more correct, and changing body posture to give it a more real and natural movement," explains Miguel Ángel Robles.

With regard to the pedestal, the original one has been replaced by a new, larger one, made of pine wood, and which has a carved inscription that reads 'Veritas'. "The substitution was motivated after removing the stucco, since they showed very poor assemblies that put the material stability of the image at risk," says Robles.

"The substitution was motivated after removing the stucco, since they showed very poor assemblies that put the material stability of the image at risk," says Robles.

Lastly, the restorers have applied re-polychrome and patination, similar to that of Layug on the feet, which brings a character of unity to the whole image and restores its devotional condition. In this way, the Truth and Tabernacle Parish Group restores to worship a sculptural image "that could be considered practically new, also counting on the adaptation of the original body, with obvious anatomical deficiencies", concludes José Manuel Leiva.

At the end of the work, it can be seen that the effigy "follows the postulates of contemporary Cordovan imagery, specifically that of Francisco Romero Zafra, with whom Willy Tadeo-Layug trained and with whom he maintains a close friendship," adds Leyva, while commenting that the two headlines of Verdad and Sagrario "create an aesthetic line that aims to be maintained over the next few years with a view to growing as a brotherhood corporation," adds the pro-brotherhood's artistic advisor.

The Lord of Truth, who, like the Virgin of the Tabernacle, parades in the afternoon and evening of Passion Saturday, represents the moment of the religious process in which Jesus declares himself the Son of God in front of the High Priest Caiaphas, who he rips his clothes in the presence of his father-in-law Anás and a Sanhedrin soldier, a work that is also being carried out by Layug in his workshop in the Philippines.

Translation of an article about Willy Tadeo Layug and Jesús de la Verdad, in the newspaper "El Español".

The Christ who came from the Philippines: this is the remodeled image of Jesus of Truth, in Malaga

The Asian image maker already made the image of the titular Mariana in 2020: "His dream was to see a Virgin under a canopy in Andalusia."

Cross the Mediterranean; traverse Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India; pass through the Bay of Bengal and, finally, fly over the Indochina peninsula. At first glance, it may seem like the ideal trip for lovers of backpacking tourism. However, this was the journey made by the image of Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Verdad, from the Carranque parish group. The carving from Malaga has crossed half the world with a destination set in the GPS: the Philippines. The reason? Place of residence of Willy Tadeo Layug, the Asian artist in charge of intervening in the cofrade carving.

David Santos is the president of this association that began its journey in 2014. In statements to EL ESPAÑOL from Malaga, he explains that they learned about the work of the Filipino image maker thanks to the friendship he had with a brother from the corporation. Santos recounts that, when the idea was proposed to him, it seemed "a bit crazy": "The Philippines making an image for Malaga? He had never heard that, but we talked to him, he told us that he knew Romero Zafra and showed us his work Finally, we reached an agreement for him to make us the Virgen del Sagrario."

After this incorporation, they decided to undertake the integral intervention to the carving of Christ. The bust and the hands of the image traveled to Pampanga in September 2021: "We did not want to change the size, so we decided that he would be the one to remodel it," says Santos. Miguel Ángel Gálvez Robles and Marta García Plaza were in charge of finishing the body and restoring the feet, as well as executing a new base. Regarding the result, he states that they are "very happy because it has been widely accepted" by the brothers and the people who have seen it.

osé Manuel Leiva, known for his participation in the brotherhoods and parish groups, was the point of union between this corporation and Willy Tadeo: "He and I are friends on Facebook. We talk a lot and one day he told me that his dream was to have a Virgin under a canopy in Andalusia. I told him that I was going to make his dream come true, so I tried to convince Truth and Sagrario of the need to incorporate his image as a headline," he says.

He says that the artist is "a benchmark" in the Philippines, to the point of being the author of the image that presided over the mass that Pope Francis officiated in Manila before two million faithful. A friend of Romero Zafra and a great connoisseur of the work of Juan Vega, Miñarro or Ruiz Montes, Leiva defines Layug as a versatile author who sings, paints or reinterprets sacred art through the cultural characteristics of his land: "The polychromes in his work have a certain Asian influence, but he draws on the Andalusian baroque", emphasizes Leiva.

What is the explanation behind this project? For José Manuel there are two reasons. The first, globalization: "There is the possibility of talking in real time with someone from the other part of the world. When they told me that the Philippines is very far away, I answered that 200 kilometers is also a long distance." The other reason, providence: "I gave him my books on ceramics and we began to talk. In 2021, five centuries of the Christianization of the Philippines by Magellan, who arrived in 1521, were fulfilled; in gratitude for that, he gave us the Virgin " .

Leiva points out that this artistic exchange between Spain and Asia has been common in the past, especially in Seville. "There are people who tell us that we've gone too far, but you can't say no to a gift like that." As a sign of this international link, the proclamation of the corporation for the year 2021 was pronounced by Rosa Agüera, Philippine consul in Malaga.

"Willy has been a Nazarene of the students of Seville. He knows all the brotherhoods of Malaga, so as he comes I see him going from one place to another without giving me a break. This shows that Malaga has a lot of names everywhere," he says.

Article about the works of Willy Tadeo Layug with Jesús de la Verdad y web La Horcina.

The Nao Victoria was the first ship to circumnavigate the globe.

Being fulfilled this year 2022, the Fifth Centenary of the feat culminated by Juan Sebastián Elcano with the 18 survivors of the first circumnavigation of the world.

Notorious episode was that of the scales in the current Philippine Islands, creating a trade route with the Hispanic territory that would remain during the following centuries. So this boat, titled Santa María de la Victoria, in memory of the patron saint of Malaga, Returns to Spain again -coincidentally at the present time there is a replica in the Port of Malaga- and from the Philippines comes a work of art that aims to increase the, already extensive, brotherhood heritage of Malaga.

The famous Filipino sculptor Willy Tadeo-Layug, with whom he had previously collaborated previously the Truth and Tabernacle Parish Group (San José Obrero Parish) of the Malaga neighborhood of Carranque, has delivered a piece on which he has been working in the last few months.

The work in question is a Christian sculpture that represents the moment of Religious process, in which Jesus declares himself Son of God in front of the High Priest Caiaphas, who tears his clothes in the presence of his father-in-law Annas and a soldier of the Sanhedrin (work that is also being done by Layug).

The original making of the piece was carried out by Mario Zambrano from Seville in 2015, procession through the streets of Malaga until 2019. However, on the occasion of

the pandemic, the corporation decided to bet on the replacement of its owner Mariana given the null artistic quality of it, then contacting the Filipino sculptor Willy

Tadeo-Layug, being the architect of the new Virgen del Sagrario. Also, happy with the work of the Filipino artist, it was decided to send the bust of Jesus of Truth so that

finished the parts that the first author had left unfinished, such as the back of the head, which had a mass in the amorphous hair and without movement.

In relation to the activities of adaptation and completion of the image, the artist sculptor Willy Tadeo-Layug was in charge of restructuring and correcting anatomical both of the bust and of the hands, including the re-polychrome and patinated of these parts offering a more human look. The image maker Layug in addition to have notably improved the physiognomy of the image's face, which lacked

no artistic interest, has removed part of the thick lock of hair on the right side that It prevented the correct vision of the face.

On the other hand, the restorers Miguel Ángel Robles Gálvez and Marta García Plaza.  They were in charge of the body and its base; These tasks include:

adaptation of the bust to the body, the finishing of the body and the feet making them anatomically correct and the change of body posture to give it a more real and natural movement. Regarding the base, it was replaced by a new one larger, in pine wood and with a carved inscription that reads

"VERITAS”; the substitution was motivated after removing the stuccoes and they showed some very poor assemblages that put the material stability of the image at risk.

Finally, the restorers carried out the repolychrome and patinated, similar to that of Layug in the feet, which brings a character of unity to the whole image and restores the condition devotional

In this way, the Truth and Tabernacle Parish Group restores to worship an image sculpture that could be considered practically new, also counting on the adaptation of the original body, with obvious anatomical deficiencies, thanks to the work of the aforementioned restorers.

The new effigy follows the postulates of contemporary Cordovan imagery, specifically Francisco Romero Zafra, with whom Willy Tadeo-Layug trained and with who maintains a close friendship. In fact, the Filipino recently acquired a Dolorosa by Romero Zafra, which he currently exhibits at his residence on the continent Asian. Thus, the two holders of Truth and Tabernacle create an aesthetic line that aims to stay for the next few years with a view to growing as a corporation brother.
